Check out the link below y'all. We are super stoked on this documentation of the process and the ideas behind our new record, Agar! Enjoy... some great characters in this one :)
This month of Jazzilla will be inspired by the timeless funkified beauty of St. Louis native Grant Green. Unsung in many respects, his lines are some of the bitiest yet juicy around and they transcended multiple genres. We will feature some select Grant Green / "Green-esque" tunes. Additionally (per a facet of Jazzilla) we will be stoked to add some Green flavor to M2 originals that fit the vibe. Fellow twin Ako Jefferson will be DJing a set inspired by GG. Get ready to groove you swingin' cats! (poster by Dustin Ortiz)
Always stoked to play in our home zone of SD. Playing in Balboa Park will be extra dreamy. +++Surf Craft Exhibition + food and drink by Stone Brewery + a set of new tunes by yours truly! It will be well worth it and a tastefully curated night of radness.

In some cases the island that jazz finds itself on is isolated and self deprecating due to its alienating of outside influences. Jazz that embraced and reinterpreted forms alien to its own (I.e. Miles Davis + psychedelic rock, Dave Bruebeck + Hungarian Folk, John Coltrane + Indian Raga, Grant Green + funk-R&B, etc.) distinguished itself as legendary. Our own history as Mattson 2 follows this model of embracement. In our compositions, the love of one form effects the love of the other. Disparate sounds work to create an identity. Jazz is the inspiration behind Jazzilla. With multiple genres and mediums in tow, the experience is realized.
On every third Wednesday of the month the Mattson 2 along with The Spare Room, Hollywood take on a collaborative experience dubbed "Jazzilla." It is a night curated by Mattson 2 that is rooted in jazz that encompasses many different genres past, present, and future. Jazzilla mission is not to just recycle old jazz tunes or showcase a tradition in the fashion of a museum piece. That is why each month will be honed and curated via a chosen theme and a highlighted artist whose aesthetics extend into our world. It is not a night to prove one's virtuosity or demonstrate an expansive knowledge of Jazz repertoire. The theme will extended into the night, showcasing and influencing a Mattson 2 performance, a DJ set, drink creations, guest performers, visuals, and more. It's everything WE would want from a jazz night . . . we hope you dig.

4 years since their record "Feeling Hands," The Mattson 2 are due to release their fourth album "Agar" on CD, Digital Download September 16, and Vinyl mid October 2014. In order to create the stunning musical journey of Agar, the Mattson 2 recorded the album completely live in the studio at Earth Star Creation Center in Venice Beach CA. The live approach further added to the exciting layers of improvisation and perfectly composed chaos via their inimitable drums, guitar, and loop based sound. The droning, raga ("agar" backwards) influenced vistas of Agar are as technically liberating as they are hauntingly avant-garde. And it shows the twins more telepathically connected than ever because all songs were recorded totally live in the same room.
A recording of a live happening is not just a mere documentation; yes, it captures the vibe of the artist at a current state in his or her career, but it's much more than a timepiece. In those old Eddie Harris or Chet Baker or Billy Holiday recordings you could feel the soul of the individual. That is because the record instantaneously became a living-breathing thing as the artist metaphysically transplanted her or his soul into the recording. In all the great records, many genius souls got together and, transcending verbal communication, their instruments became extensions of themselves that projected unquantifiable emotion, transmitting things that traditional language or vocality could never capture.
A similar form of consciousness inspired AGAR. On February 5, 2014, twin Jonathan Mattson, producer and long time friend Thomas “T-moe” Campbell, lapsteelist Farmer Dave Scher, engineer John X Volaitis, and myself arrived at Earthstar Creation Center in Venice Beach California. While M2 and Farmer set up, tuned up, vibed up, T-moe went to his station, sitting in the perfect sweet-spot of the room where he could hear all the sounds. John X was at the board tweaking knobs and gettin' tones (of course, while tuning the room balance, he was smiling and bobbing his head to the jams. I imagined what he might have looked like when he recorded the Rolling Stones, with his bright green hair, leather pants, and a leopard print vest. Or was it the vest that was leather?). We started cooking. The sound was captured and put into a mason jar with holes on top so it could continue to breathe, move, and survive. It was a collective experience that became protoplasmic and gelatinous. The sound produced was a result of two twin minds and three equally important non-twin minds amplifying, stoking, and vibing simultaneously.
Prior to the release of "Agar" The Mattson 2 will be touring extensively throughout the United States August 8th through October 8th and will be selling exclusive pre-release copies of the album at each of their tour stops, before it's released. So take advantage of getting the record early…Also here are some other M2 Merchandise items hot off the press that you'll be able to pick up at the shows….
These items will be available on The Mattson 2 online store soon. In the meantime, you can purchase this stuff at any Mattson 2 shows along their tour. Thanks for your interest and support!
Tonight (8/8/14) will be the opening night of Mattson 2's Agar US tour. The official release date for Agar is September 16 on CD and Digital Download, Mid October is the Vinyl release. If your at any of the stops on the tour before September 16, those in attendance will have an opportunity to get the record before it officially lands in stores. After September 16, you can get it at our shows, our online store, iTunes, or in record stores near you!
